How to Treat Sinus Infection at Home?

Sinusitis or more commonly known as sinus infection is inflammation of the air cavities within the passages of the nose. Our skull is filled with air capillaries which make the mucus and keeps our nasal cavity free of allergens and pollutants. A sinus infection causes inflammation in these capillaries leading to blockage of mucus and air creating pressure and severe headache and can culminate into a bacterial infection.

Sinus can be triggered off by infection, allergies and suspended particulate matters. Sinus can be categorized into various kinds such as, acute sinus, subacute sinus, infectious and non- infectious sinus.

The various symptoms of a sinus infection include high fever, headache, facial inflammations, nasal discharge, and facial swelling and sneezing. Although taking a medical help is the best solution to treat severe sinus infections, but mild infections can be treated at home unless medical help is not provided. Read on to know some remedies to treat sinus at home. Sinus can be caused by certain bacteria, fungi and viruses.

Here are some Home Remedies to treat sinus at home:

  • Menthol: Boil some mint leaves in a large pan of water, cover the head with a towel over the pan and inhale the air. The menthol present in the mint leaves open the nasal cavity and relieves the problem of a headache and nasal congestion.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: Apple Cider Vinegar has a plethora of benefits not only does it cure acne, sore throat, dandruff bloating, but it also relieves sinus. Taking three tablespoons of apple cider vinegar thrice a day can cure the trouble within a couple of days.
  • Oregano oil: Apart from improving digestion, relieving gastrointestinal troubles. This magical oil can also treat sinus. In a large bowl mix, some water and add few drops of oregano oil to it, now place your head in the hot water bowl, cover your head with a towel and inhale the mixture.
  • Turmeric to the rescue: Turmeric is an anti-inflammatory herb and contains cur cumin, which clears the congestion in the nasal cavity and reduces nasal swelling.
  • Hydrogen peroxide and Sea Salt: Hydrogen peroxide mixed with sea salt can be used to relieve sinus, this combination immediately flushes out nasal congestion and provides quick relief.
  • Ginger: Ginger is another effective herb from our kitchen shelf to provide quick relief for sinus. Ginger root can be chewed, or made into a tea to relieve the infection.
  • Saline Rinse: Saline rinse is an age old remedy to get rid of the sinus. Add some salt to a pan of hot water and inhale the concoction to relieve the trouble.
  • Castor Oil: Castor oil has numerous healing properties one such being healing sinus. A few drops of castor oil can be gently massaged on the nose, the oil reaches deep down the layers of the skin and melts the nasal congestion thus relieving the problem.
  • Garlic: Though it has a very strong and pungent smell, but this smelly little herb has multiple health benefits. Garlic should be consumed internally; it helps in diluting the nasal congestion.
  • Vitamins: Deficiency of certain vitamins can also aggravate the problem of sinus. Vitamin supplements such as Vitamin-c, Vitamin-D, Zinc, and B-complex can help in soothing the problem.
  • Elderberry: Elderberry syrup can be consumed daily to cure sinus. Elderberry tea can be prepared and consumed as well.

The above-mentioned home remedies can provide temporary relief, but a doctor’s help is necessary to cure the problem in the long run and to restrict it from further aggravating. Apart from seeking a doctor’s help, dietary changes should be made to help to solve the problem, restricting the consumption of milk and its products, cigarettes and alcohol.

Drinking plenty of water, juices, using nets pod, grape fruit extract coconut oil, cayenne, mullein and astragalus root, facial steaming, steam bath, herbal sinus steam, nasal rinse, essential oils pro-biotic and colloidal silver are also beneficial in treating sinus.
